从事我国远海西沙群岛的海洋底栖动物海绵及其共生微生物药源分子的发现、海洋生物功能分子的规模化制备、结构优化、生物活性及作用机制研究。阐明了中国远海西沙海域海绵资源的化学结构多样性及其功能特点。构建了首个基于西沙特殊生境的海绵标本库和研究用样本库。采用HPLC-DAD分子指纹图谱示踪结合NMR谱学特征分析快速识别方法,从30余种西沙海绵中分离鉴定了具有化学他感效应的环肽、萜醌、聚酮、萜烯等特征结构1000余种,全新骨架化合物20个。通过多靶标活性筛选和构效关系研究,优选出10个强活性的新型抗肿瘤先导化合物(IC50达nM级)。阐明了B-5和B-6诱导肿瘤细胞凋亡、抑制细胞增殖和迁移的分子机制,发现B-5是首个作用于促凋亡蛋白puma的海洋分子。研制了3个作用机制明确、活性显著、安全性高的抗肿瘤候选药物,利用全合成方法解决了PK-13的药源问题。探索出一条“基于特殊生境海绵化学防御及共生体系的强活性抗肿瘤先导化合物的发现”的高效途径,推动了西沙海域海绵资源的深层开发。

主持4项国家863课题、3项国家科技重大专项、5项国家自然科学1金等课题22项。获“第六届施维雅青年药物化学家奖”(2003)、“上海药学科技二等奖”(2006)、“中国药学科学技术二等奖”(2007)、“上海医学科技二等奖”(2007)、“中华中医药学会科学技术二等奖”(2009)。近五年以通讯作者发表SCI收录论文28篇,影响因子5分以上3篇。申请发明专利18项,其中11项获专利授权
